Ranking players for Fantasy Basketball is a completely different animal than in baseball or football. The large amount of crossover between both a player’s positional eligibility and roster flexibility allow for a true best overall player approach.

Since most Fantasy Basketball rosters consist of a PG/SG/G/SF/PF/F/C/UTIL/UTIL lineup, a player with a SG/SF eligibility can be started six of the nine spots. Even a player with just PG or C eligibility has three different spots available, so drafting for position is not a factor until the last few rounds.

Now let’s get to the actual 2015 Fantasy Basketball rankings. I have ranked the top 200 players regardless of position and the rankings are geared towards both category/roto style of play (like most Fantasy Baseball leagues) or a points-based system (like Fantasy Football).

I think that in the general sense of using points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and three pointers made along with the above roster construction, the style of scoring does not differentiate the rankings too much.

Some might use a player’s weighted percentage in ranking differences between roto and points leagues. A weighted percentage is using a player’s overall usage in field goal/free throw attempts when factoring in their shooting percentages.

I think most points-based leagues have this built in by using 1 point for field goal/free throw made, and -1 point per missed shot. When you combine their overall point total with their shooting percentage it takes care of the weighted percentage issue.

That is why I stick to a value-based strategy with rankings. For position rankings please check out the guards, forwards or centers, but as for now here are my rankings by each player’s overall value:

Notable Observations

  • I think it is safe to say that LeBron James is still the best overall player on the planet, but his Fantasy value has dipped. With a full season under his belt and the best assist player (Irving) and best rebounder (Love) he has played with, all of his statistics will see a slight dip.
  • The two players that have a serious chance at finishing as the top overall performer outside of the top-3 would be DeMarcus Cousins and Russell Westbrook. If Kevin Durant misses any time than Westbrook shoots up to the top spot. If Cousins stays out of the Boogie zone, then he could be the most prolific player in the league.
  • By using a player’s overall value in the different statistical categories, the big men definitely have an advantage. Seeing Andre Drummond in the top-10 and Nikola Vucevic in the top-15 may seem weird, but if you look back at their seasons last year they do belong.
  • With the majority of his best teammates playing in different cities this season, Damian Lillard will be a counting stat superstar. I think he finishes right around the middle of the top-10.
