2016 Fantasy Baseball Top 250 Rankings: Kershaw Goes Down

By on July 27, 2016
Overworked Arms

A little over a week has gone by since the All-Star break and things are really starting to get interesting.

We have a lot of injury news, both good and bad, affecting the rankings. We have the trade winds picking up as well.

This is causing plenty of players to move up and down the Top 250 Fantasy Baseball Rankings quite a bit. You may even be surprised at where I move one or two of them.

As more and more trades happen things are only going to get more interesting, so you will definitely need to come back next week as my rankings are sure to change.

That said this week I’m going to touch on a few of the more major players that moved due to injury news and trades that went down over the past week.

Injuries

Clayton Kershaw, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers

A week ago I mentioned that I didn’t move Kershaw down in my rankings too much. This was because I expected him to return soon.

That doesn’t sound like the case now as he had a pretty major setback in his rehab. There is even talk that he is going go to have season ending surgery.

He has actually moved completely off my rankings until there is any sign that he will pitch again this season. Honestly even those of you in keeper leagues should be worried if the surgery happens.

Dee Gordon, 2B, Miami Marlins

Gordon seems like a forgotten man in a lot of Fantasy Baseball circles.

I’m not quite sure why, but nobody seems to be talking about the fact that Gordon is due to return on July 28.

I’m not ready to anoint him the second or even third best second baseman the rest of the way, but I’ve moved him up to No. 6 since his speed alone is a difference maker in a league where steals are few and far between.

Hunter Pence, OF, San Francisco Giants

Pence has missed the last two months due to a hamstring strain. However, it appears he is finally ready to return to the field soon.

Don’t forget Pence was having a pretty good year for himself through the first two months of the season. He was on pace to give you 22 home runs, 116 RBI and 87 runs.

Jordan Zimmermann, SP, Detroit Tigers

Looks to be nearing a return after hitting the DL with a neck strain in early July.

His first rehab assignment went well, four shutout innings, but he will need at least one more rehab assignment.

Regardless though I expect him to be back next week and be a valuable asset for Fantasy teams once again.

Trades

Aroldis Chapman, RP, Chicago Cubs

The hammer dropped on Monday as the Cubs traded four prospects to the Yankees for Aroldis Chapman.

Honestly this does nothing to move Chapman up my rankings at all, but it almost did.

What this did do was immediately vault Andrew Miller up the rankings, since he will now be the closer in New York.

It also moved Hector Rondon out of the rankings, as he now will be nothing more than a set up guy in Chicago.

Melvin Upton, OF, Toronto Blue Jay

This one hurts a little to talk about. I was really hoping the Orioles were going to be able to acquire him, but no dice.

What this also hurts is Upton’s value going forward. He will now be nothing more than a fourth outfielder, behind Jose Bautista, Kevin Pillar and Michael Sanders. A shame for a guy who was on track for a huge bounce back season.
