2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings: Breakout Stars

Welcome back to the 2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings.

While everyone in the Fantasy world is freaking out about the return of football, baseball season is nearing its end. Even though there are still just under two months left, in the grand scheme of things, that isn’t a lot.

Even though the days left in the season are numbered, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be breakout stars within the remaining days of the season. In these rankings, that is either due to me neglecting someone for too long (guilty as charged) or someone just catching fire in the past few weeks. Either way, there still can be someone out on the waiver wire that can help you win a championship.

While these next few people in the “Stock Up” section might already be claimed in your leagues, you still should keep out a close eye for the next breakout stars of the MLB, because trust me, there will be some.

2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings

Stock Up

Whit Merrifield, 2B, Kansas City Royals

Last season, Whit Merrifield made his MLB debut as a 27 year old. He had over 300 at-bats that turned into a .283 BA. That’s nice, but it is a lot better when it is paired with the 13 home runs, 51 RBI, 52 runs scored and 19 stolen bases, all way better than last years totals. Also, he has increased his batting average by 10 points. While he isn’t an elite contributor in any category, he is a true five-category producer who has value on any team in any type of league.

Paul DeJong, SS, St. Louis Cardinals

One of the biggest breakout stars of this season has been Paul DeJong, the 24 year-old shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has been amazing in his rookie season, sporting a .291 batting average with 17 home runs, 41 RBI, and 30 runs scored in only 244 at-bats. He is blossoming into a Fantasy star right before our eyes, and all we can do is hope that he isn’t a fluke while we enjoy his present production.

Rafael Devers, 3B, Boston Red Sox

Rafael Devers is only 20 years old, so I would be lying if I said that I predicted his instant impact. However, that is exactly what he has done in his first 14 big league games. He is batting .327 with three home runs, nine RBI, and eight runs scored. It is too small of a sample size to really make anything of it, but he is a very talented young player. So it isn’t to far-fetched to think that he can be a solid producer for the rest of the season, even if he isn’t batting .327 like he is right now.

Stock Down

Aaron Judge, RF, New York Yankees

In just one month since the All-Star Break, Aaron Judge has dropped his batting average by 40 points from .329 to .289. There is no reason to panic for Judge owners as his average was unsustainable due to his past production and BABIP, and there is a likely possibility that it will continue to fall. However, he is still and stud, and his run production will keep him as an elite Fantasy option. Still, he has to fall down a little bit in these rankings.
