Week 3 Target Watch: Antonio Brown Dominates Target Share

The number of players with targets in Week 3 is the highest in a while. The Week 3 target watch yields a whopping 25 players in the league seeing double-digit targets. This list includes wide receivers, running backs and tight ends. For Fantasy owners, analyzing targets is just as important as Fantasy points.

When Fantasy owners look to the waiver wire, often they sort by total Fantasy points. However, seeing who the quarterback is looking for is often more important than the total touchdowns or Fantasy points. This indicates that these players are a vital part of the offense.

The analysis below shows the players to keep an eye on. Some players received more targets because of game flow, some saw more because of injury to others on the team, and some should be on the Fantasy radar.

Please note none of the charts below show total receptions, total Fantasy points or touchdowns. The sole purpose of this analysis is to look at targets.

Week 3 Target Watch

Each week I will be reviewing the targets from the past week, the season and even digging deeper by running back and tight end. I will also be analyzing any trends I find along the way.

Week 3 Double-Digit Targets

Player Team Targets
Doug Baldwin Seattle Seahawks 15
Emmanuel Sanders Denver Broncos 15
Larry Fitzgerald Arizona Cardinals 15
Antonio Brown * Pittsburgh Steelers 14
A.J. Green Cincinnati Bengals 13
Odell Beckham, Jr. New York Giants 13
Mike Evans Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12
Julio Jones Atlanta Falcons 12
Ty Montgomery Green Bay Packers 12
Jimmy Graham Seattle Seahawks 11
Jarvis Landry * Miami Dolphins 11
Christian McCaffrey Carolina Panthers 11
Stefon Diggs Minnesota Vikings 11
Golden Tate Detroit Lions 11
Brandon Marshall New York Giants 11
Sterling Shepard New York Giants 10
Rishard Matthews Tennessee Titans 10
Adam Humphries Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10
Pierre Garcon San Francisco 49ers 10
Kenny Stills Miami Dolphins 10
Zach Ertz * Philadelphia Eagles 10
DeVante Parker Miami Dolphins 10
Rob Gronkowski New England Patriots 10
Kenny Britt Cleveland Browns 10
Devin Funchess Carolina Panthers 10

Last week, three players earned an asterisk for having a double-digit target game in back-to-back weeks. This week, the same number of players have an asterisk. However, this week, 25 players in the league had double-digit targets, the most all season. Multiple players from teams appear: the New York Giants have three players with double-digit targets from Week 3!

Two players from Tampa Bay make the list, two Miami Dolphins make the list, two Seattle Seahawks and a running back/wide receiver combo make the list from the Carolina Panthers. Some names to watch include Rishard Matthews, who has quietly been racking up targets this season. He had nine targets in Week 1 (tied for second-most on the team), five in Week 2 (tied for the most in the team) and 10 in Week 3, by far the most on the team. He’s owned in most leagues, but is slowly earning his way onto starting rosters.

Top Tight End Targets In Week 3

Jimmy Graham Seattle Seahawks 11
Rob Gronkowski * New England Patriots 10
Zach Ertz * Philadelphia Eagles 10
Jermaine Gresham Cincinnati Bengals 9
Eric Ebron Detroit Lions 7
Evan Engram New York Giants 7

In Week 2, Jason Witten and Zach Ertz earned an asterisk for double-digit targets in Weeks 1 and 2. Now, Ertz makes it three weeks in a row with double-digit targets. Rob Gronkowski joins him with double-digit targets two weeks in a row as well. Both tight ends are TE1s in a year where healthy, dependable tight ends are hard to come by.

Rookie Evan Engram makes the list, which is interesting, especially considering three other Giants made the list with double-digit targets. Those four players made up 41 of the 47 passes Eli Manning threw. It will be tough to trust any Giants pass catcher from week to week. However, Engram is now 45 percent owned, and may be a viable option for owners searching for a tight end.

Top Running Back Targets In Week 3

Ty Montgomery * Green Bay Packers 12
Christian McCaffrey Carolina Panthers 11
Theo Riddick Detroit Lions 9
Andre Ellington Arizona Cardinals 8

If this list was expanded, an additional five running backs had seven targets. However, capping it at four shows how few running backs had a big role in the passing game in Week 3. Christian McCaffrey took on a bigger role with Kelvin Benjamin out. However, it does seem that Benjamin avoided serious injury and may be active in Week 4.

Fantasy owners in PPR leagues should keep an eye on Riddick and Ellington. While Ellington is no David Johnson, he may have some value in PPR formats. He caught five of those targets. He and Chris Johnson are the Arizona backs to own, although no need to rush out and grab them.
