Welcome back to the Preseason Fantasy Football Injury Report.
We are headed into the last week of the preseason, which is the most boring of all the weeks (for Fantasy purposes) as most starters either barely play of don’t play at all.
On the contrary, Week 3 (which we just passed) is the most exciting of all the weeks (for Fantasy purposes) because it is the week that the starters generally play for the longest amounts of time.
This means that most significant preseason injuries occur during the third week of the preseason, and this year was no different.
We have a bunch of big news to go over, so let’s get started.
2017 Fantasy Football Injury Report
Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
Latest News: Andrew Luck is still on the Colts’ PUP list and isn’t practicing to begin the week.
Fantasy Analysis: It is becoming more and more likely that Luck misses the first week of the regular season and possibly more. The Colts organization is becoming increasingly harder to read about their thoughts on Luck’s status, so he really is a question mark at this point.
Spencer Ware, Kansas City Chiefs
Latest News: Spencer Ware is likely out for the season with a torn PCL.
Fantasy Analysis: This is absolutely massive news. Kareem Hunt was viewed as a huge Fantasy sleeper coming into the year with his value depending on if he could win the starting job or not. Now it is all his. Sadly, Hunt now goes from a 7-9 round pick to a 3-5 round pick, but if you were able to nab him before the Ware injury, then you should be absolutely thrilled.
Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants
Latest News: According to Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo, Beckham’s ankle is improving. However, he is still yet to return to practice.
Fantasy Analysis: Right now, Beckham’s Week 1 status is just about the definition of the term “questionable.” It really could go either way, but if he was forced to miss Week 1, he wouldn’t have to miss much more than that. Don’t put too much worry into this if you own Beckham.
Cameron Meredith, Chicago Bears
Latest News: An MRI revealed that Meredith has suffered a torn ACL, effectively ending his season.
Fantasy Analysis: Meredith was a sleeper coming into the year: one with decent yet not huge upside. He is now out for the year, but that isn’t where the huge impact lies. The big picture really lies with Jordan Howard’s Fantasy value. The more passing game that he can get, the better chance he has to succeed, but the opposite is true as well. We will have to see if he can overcome the Bears lack of a passing game or if he is the new Todd Gurley.
Jordan Matthews, Buffalo Bills
Latest News: Bills coach Sean McDermott is “cautiously optimistic” about Matthews’ Week 1 availability.
Fantasy Analysis: In my opinion, you should avoid Matthews. I think he will play Week 1, but I think the fact that he hasn’t been able to connect with Tyrod Taylor at all in any sort of game of practice really could halt any sort of Fantasy value that he carries until later in the season.
Julian Edelman, New England Patriots
Latest News: An MRI confirmed that Julian Edelman has suffered a torn ACL, effectively ending his season.
Fantasy Analysis: Even though Edelman is out for the year, which sucks, the Patriots as a whole will be fine. Tom Brady will be fine and whoever the Patriots have running the ball in any given week (don’t assume anything with a Belichick backfield) will be fine. As for the Patriots top receivers (Rob Gronkowski, Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan), they can receive a slight boost in value, but not anything too crazy and definitely not a decrease.
