Welcome to another edition of our 2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings.
As always, a week with baseball is always a good week. However, to be quite honest, this past week was quite a boring week.
There were no huge headlines. Sure, Freddie Freeman went down with an injury that will keep him out 8-10 weeks. I guess that’s a pretty big story, but do you really expect me to title this article as 2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings: Freddie Freeman Got Hurt? Definitely not.
Another headline from this past week was that the San Francisco Giants finally remembered how to play baseball. While they still dug themselves into a huge hole to start the season, one that may be too deep for them to be able to make the playoffs, they still had a very nice week. They are bouncing back nicely and should at least be a competitive team for the rest of the season.
Alright, that is enough blabbering about minor stories around baseball. Just like this article’s title says, let’s get back into business as usual and go over some players who have seen their Fantasy stock change over the past week before revealing our updated 2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings.
2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings
Corey Dickerson, OF, Tampa Bay Rays
I am sure that you all have that one owner in one of your leagues that endlessly offers one particular player for trade to no avail. Well, that happened to me with Corey Dickerson.
Maybe I should have definitely taken him.
So far this season, Dickerson is batting .343 with 11 home runs, 29 runs scored and 22 RBI. He has been an elite producer in the outfield, and this was unexpected by many (including me) coming into the year. He should continue to be a solid option moving forward until proven otherwise.
Eduardo Nunez, 3B/OF, San Francisco Giants
Eduardo Nunez might be one of the most underrated Fantasy players in the entire game. Last season, he was quietly one of the top Fantasy players at his position. This year, he is doing the same exact thing, only quieter.
Coming into the year, many people liked Nunez as a sleeper to help out in the stolen base department. I disagreed, as I didn’t like his splits between the Twins and the Giants. So far this year, Nunez has proved me wrong by batting .272 with 16 runs scored, 15 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. He should remain productive in both points-based and category-based leagues for the rest of the season, and also add a bonus with his positional flexibility.
Trevor Story, SS, Colorado Rockies
First off, let me say that I hate the new 10-day DL (I am just realizing that this could have made an interesting topic for the intro. Oh well, it’s too late now. Maybe next week.). I don’t see what was wrong with the 15-day DL. I get that it gives team more flexibility, but it also makes teams not only put players who could likely play through their injuries on the disabled list, but it also gives false on connotations on when a player will actually be able to return from injuries. This is because there is only the 60-day DL and the 10-day DL and nothing in between. So if a player is out for one month, it is confusing because he is put on the 10-day DL but is out for much longer.
Ranting aside, while Story’s injury brings him down a bit, the real factor was his performance. While he was healthy, he only managed to bat .180. The home runs, runs scored and RBI were still there, but the average was killer. While he should be able to bounce back from that number once he returns, the combination of poor performance and coming off of an injury makes for a drop in stock.
