Welcome back to the 2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings.
As we near closer and closer to the end of the MLB regular season, the phrase “regression to the mean” should all but disappear from our vocabulary.
If a player is playing a lot better this season than he has in the past, it is too late to expect anything other than his performance this season to continue.
However, this is quite obvious and should have probably been a realization for you weeks ago. The new thing that you need to realize, as referenced by the title, are hot and cold streaks.
At this point in the season, you can’t even expect a player to regress towards the mean of their year-long performance. If a player right now is either hot or cold, with such little time left in the season, the best way to value them is at the level that they are currently playing at.
In our rankings, both now and in the final coming weeks, we want to reflect that. The rankings in the next few weeks will be the most subject to change as ever before. Hot players and cold players will rapidly slide up and down the rankings. While the volatility of these rankings will increase with each week, this week’s edition of the rankings has its fair share of changes. Let’s discuss some of them in the Stock Changes section of the article.
2017 Rest-Of-The-Season Rankings
Stock Up
Willson Contreras, C/OF, Chicago Cubs
After a very slow start to the year, Contreras has bounced back to become the player that we all expected him to be. Right now, he is sitting with a .274 average with 21 home runs and 70 RBI, which is amazing production from the catcher position. He is one of the top catchers in all of Fantasy right now, and there is even a case to be made for Contreras to be at #1.
Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami Marlins
Stanton has finally been able to stay healthy. So I guess a .296 average with 50 home runs and 108 RBI is what you get when that happens. That’s pretty cool, I guess.
Stanton is the current front-runner for the NL MVP and with good reason. He is playing out of his mind and is officially among the top 10 players in all of Fantasy Baseball right now.
Stock Down
Aaron Judge, OF, New York Yankees
I am sure that everyone knows the deal with Judge. I knew this was going to happen as well. He has cooled down from his crazy start to the year as his BABIP has finally somewhat normal since the All Star Break (although it is still ridiculously high on the season). Also, the strikeouts, but if you are a Judge owner, you probably don’t want to hear about them yet again. He still is a stud, and will win you run production categories, but isn’t the supernatural being that he was near the start of the year.
Jason Vargas, SP, Kansas City Royals
After absolutely mowing down the league in the first half of the season, Vargas has looked like normal Jason Vargas so far in the second half. His ERA has risen by almost an entire 1.5 points since the All-Star Break, as it is now sitting at 3.72 on the season. The man who started off the year as a rock in your rotation will finish as a solid depth piece.
