Is it me, or is this football season really dragging on? It just seems like every week is pure chaos and there are very few trends to really grab onto… Or maybe it’s because I see Fantasy Football as merely a fun diversion that’s just tiding me over until we can talk more baseball.

Well, here at So-Called Fantasy Experts it’s always baseball, so the wait is never too long.

In order to get the hot stove warmed up, we’ve gathered a group of the top minds in Fantasy Baseball to break down their early rankings for the 2016 season. Last week we went through the catcher rankings, and it was pretty much agreed that Buster Posey was the obvious top choice and the position quickly turned into a big pile of mediocrity, with very little difference between catchers No. 6 and 16.

This week we moved on to first base rankings, home of many of baseball’s best hitters. Most people would say that first base is pretty deep, and if we’re talking about usable Fantasy players I’d agree. The position is pretty top heavy though, and once you get out of the Top 10, there are a lot of question marks.

We were hoping for some controversey in our rankings, but so far the level of agreement has been incredible. Last week only 23 catchers received “votes” for the Top 20, and this week just 31 first basemen were considered for the Top 25. While there is some differentiation in the ranks, it seems the Fantasy relevant player pool is pretty cut and dried.

Meet the Experts

Ray Guilfoyle – Ray is the managing editor at Fake Teams, covering fantasy baseball, football, basketball, hockey and even some English Premier League soccer. Follow him on Twitter at @FakeTeams.

Jim Finch – Jim is one of the main men over at Fantasy Assembly. It’s from him that I blatantly stole the idea of doing rankings with an associated podcast from. They were selfish at Fantasy Assembly and kept their rankings in house. We’ll forgive Jim since he’s sharing with us now. He’s on probation though. Jim is on Twitter at @TheJimFinch

Mike Hilbig – Mike , @TheFantasyDr, is the co-host of The Fantasy Insider Show, where you’ll here us talk about these rankings later this week.

Joel Henard – Joel joined the SCFE team just recently and the podcasts we’ll do around these rankings will be the real kick-off of our relationship. He’s the voice behind The Fantasy Insiders and we’re looking forward to the skills he brings to the mic.

Fabian Taylor – Fabian is one of our own. His work for So-Called Fantasy Experts has been extraordinary. He’s one of the top new baseball writers in the industry and you’ll be hearing a lot more from him. Check out all his work at SCFE and follow him on twitter at @CanucksRule247

Doug “RotoDaddy” Anderson – The RotoDaddy moniker came about when my son was born in 2003, not because I spank everybody in Fantasy Baseball (though it does happen quite a bit). You can follow me on Twitter at @RotoDaddy, although right now I don’t post very often because I’m buried in player projections and profiles.

Early First Base Sleepers and Busts

We also asked each expert to throw out one sleeper and one bust. It’ll be interesting if these names change when we get to March.

Ray Guilfoyle: SLEEPER – Byung-ho Park   BUST – Miguel Cabrera

Jim Finch: SLEEPER – Matt Adams   BUST – Mark Teixeira

Mike Hilbig: SLEEPER – Greg Bird   BUST – Wil Myers

Fabian Taylor: SLEEPER – C.J. Cron   BUST – Albert Pujols

Doug Anderson: SLEEPER – Greg Bird   BUST – Freddie Freeman

Every year the player pool has a different feel to it, and early on I’m really not sure first base is the bastion of Fantasy wealth everyone thinks it is. There are plenty of solid bats, but if you don’t get one of the top seven or eight first basemen, there is a pretty big drop-off. Maybe Byung-ho Park can add another big bat to the position.

Make sure you check back here at SCFE for the podcast where we’ll discuss these rankings and come back next week when we go over the early second base rankings.
