It was not a great week for my Weekly Value Based Drafting strategy, as studs like Antonio Brown and Julio Jones had their worst week of the year.
I think that is definitely an outlier and should be taken with a grain of salt: you can’t win every week, otherwise everyone would be doing it.
The bright side was that Devonta Freeman and Matt Forte were Top 15 players, and it would have made for a good week if the stud receivers had their normal weeks.
Before I get to this week’s value plays, I would advise you to my first installment of the series where I explain the process, as well as note that I am giving value plays off of projections; I am not focusing on deep sleepers that pop up due to injury. I would definitely use them as well as the value plays to find that right team.
Week 5 Daily Fantasy Football: Value Based Drafting Targets
Value of the Week: Michael Vick, VF : 3.52
Alright, hear me out: Pittsburgh gets an injury-riddled Chargers’ defense that just got shredded by Andy Dalton. I think his timing will be better with Antonio Brown and he will rush for 50-plus yards. This should put him around 20 points which is phenomenal value at $6,500.
Alex Smith, VF : 3.75
Philip Rivers, VF : 3.82
I have Rivers getting a few more points than Alex Smith, but it is tough to use the other options below with him. The best values at RB/WR are higher-priced players this week, so the cheaper quarterback is probably the way to go.
Jamaal Charles, VF : 4.10
Devonta Freeman, VF : 4.32
Dion Lewis, VF : 4.58
Todd Gurley, VF : 4.59
I’m going to keep rolling with Freeman until he is listed at a higher price. Jamaal Charles is worth the price this week as I have him out-scoring every other player, including quarterbacks.
Dion Lewis is also still under-valued at less than $7,000 while this might be your chance to get Gurley at a similar price.
Calvin Johnson, VF : 4.81
Julian Edelman, VF : 5.10
Julio Jones, VF : 5.14
Allen Robinson, VF : 5.48
Megatron looks closer to his dominant self than he has in almost two years and was a few inches from a dominant week against the best secondary in the league. Edelman is projected to have a field day with Dallas’ suspect secondary. I think Julio bounces back, and I added Robinson in for a much less expensive option.
Jason Witten, VF : 5.18
Owen Daniels, VF : 5.42
Witten is the only consistent part of the Cowboys’ offense that will have to try score quicker to have any chance to hang with New England. Owen Daniels will get more looks as the only trustworthy tight end and it is not like Peyton Manning is throwing darts anymore.
My All-Value Team
QB: Michael Vick
RB: Jamaal Charles
RB: Devonta Freeman
WR: Julio Jones
WR: Calvin Johnson
WR: Allen Robinson
TE: Jason Witten
K: Zach Hocker
D/ST: Detroit Lions
I was happy to fit this RB/WR/TE combo in and still not have to go bottom of the barrel on my defense. I believe that Vick can put up average numbers, which is all you really need with other skill positions this deep.
